Rooftop at QT

The rooms within the boutique QT hotel chain are known for their fun, eclectic vibe—and the Rooftop at the QT in Auckland is no exception! This stylish spot at the top of the hotel on Viaduct Harbour Avenue is perfectly positioned for a few Friday afternoon beverages, with gorgeous water and city views and a cool, relaxed atmosphere. And if the day is a little chilly, don’t let this put you off! The Rooftop has an indoor section as well as an outdoor section—and a long bar that stretches seamlessly between the two. This rooftop bar has quite a long list of mouth-watering signature cocktails. Get your friends together to work your way through the list—and don’t forget to try out the bar snacks too! The Mediterranean delights include tasty Turkish fried chicken, meatballs, croquettes, patatas bravas and the always-popular mezze plate.

HI-SO Rooftop Bar

If you like a little glamour and mystery with your nightlife, HI-SO is the Auckland rooftop bar for you! Perched at the top of the avant-garde SO/ Hotel, HI-SO sure knows how to throw a good party! With regular DJ sets on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, this is the place to go if you’re in the mood to dress up, kick up your heels and dance the night away. Open from 4pm Wednesday through Saturday, you can also pay a visit to HI-SO for a later afternoon bevvie and bite. There are olives and oysters, sharing boards and a selection of Asian-influenced dishes. As for drinks; among the usual suspects, signature cocktails and mocktails; you’ll find an impressive selection of whiskeys, categorised into Scotch whiskeys, NZ whiskeys, Irish whiskeys and American whiskeys. If you can’t find a whiskey you like here, you can’t find one anywhere!

Most unique cocktail: XXX Time, an interesting blend of black sesame oil washed Glenmorangie X, Wild Turkey rye, blended dried fruit liqueur, bitter liqueur and orange bitters, garnished with sesame candy.



The Churchill

If you’ve just started dipping your toes into Auckland’s rooftop bar scene, chances are you might’ve heard of or even visited The Churchill.  The luxury gin and cocktail rooftop bar is on the 20th floor of the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel with gorgeous, elevated views of Auckland city. The Churchill rooftop bar is all class, with a modern curved bar, an elegant interior and service to rival a fine dining restaurant. Gin is clearly the speciality here; there are a whopping 200 options on the menu! You can also choose to create your own drink by choosing a gin, a mixer and a fruity botanical… Apple and cinnamon, anyone?! It’s well worth eating here too – the food menu far surpasses your average bar grub, offering dishes like an aged beef sirloin share plate and panko eggplant sliders with chilli and rocket and miso and maple aioli.

Most unique cocktail: The Coco Chanel No.5, with toasted almond-infused citadelle gin, italicus, lavender and jasmine perfume.


Bar Albert

The view from Bar Albert simply cannot be beaten. Resting on the 38th floor above the Voco Hotel in Wyndham Street, Bar Albert actually receives the enviable title of the highest bar in New Zealand. With exquisite views over Auckland City stretching across the harbour and beyond, Bar Albert is arguably one of the best rooftop bars in Auckland to watch the sun go down. The luxe, modern vintage interior is effortlessly cool, creating a warm and sophisticated space that doesn’t draw too much attention away from the star of the show, which is clearly the panoramic vistas. If you’re looking for a Auckland rooftop venue for an intimate function, ask about the private salon area tucked away behind a hidden bookshelf.

One of Auckland’s newest rooftop bars, Sunset opened its doors to Aucklanders and visitors in July 2022. Drenched in the dreamy sunset hues of dusty orange and pink, Sunset makes for a brilliant backdrop for your Instagram post and a picture-perfect venue for a catch up with good friends. Sunset is located on the tenth floor of the Sudima Hotel on the corner of Albert and Wyndham Streets, so while it’s not the highest of Auckland’s rooftop bars, it’s in just as great a location.  There are comfy booths and couches indoors and an airy terrace outside, and DJ sunset sessions are a great way to wind down on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday night… Sunset Spritz in hand, of course!

Most unique cocktail: Garam Swizzle, made up of McJaggery Rum, Banana Skin Orgeat, Garam Bitters and Citrus blend. 

La Zeppa Kitchen and Bar

La Zeppa is a fun, casual and quirky rooftop venue situated in an industrial warehouse on Drake Street with views overlooking Victoria Park. Popular with a youthful crowd, there are often events and themed evenings taking place at La Zeppa, ranging from beach parties to music fests. The restaurant inside is a great place to rug up over winter, with a gorgeous fireplace and a great variety of tasty plates designed for sharing with friends. Outside, sit beneath colourful lanterns and share a jug of sangria of a pitcher of beer as you snack on pork cheek croquettes or curly fries. La Zeppa is our pick for a spontaneous casual weekend catch up on a clear Auckland day.

Most unique cocktail: Beekeepers Blossom, with Aperol, gin, manuka honey, lemon, egg white and a dash of aromatic bitters.

Saint Alice

Last but certainly not least, this viaduct venue is one of those effortlessly cool places that promises a good experience at any time of day. Sun-drenched and spacious, Saint Alice has something on the menu for everyone, offering pizza, pasta, sharing platters, burgers, salads and more. Sit back with a wood-fired pizza and a drink for a refreshing mid-week lunch or arrive in time for sunset drinks and stay to see the viaduct light up at night. Open seven days from 11.30am until late, Saint Alice is one of Auckland’s best rooftop bars and in a seriously sought-after location. If you’re looking for an event space on the viaduct, Little Alice is also worth checking out. The private function room within Saint Alice can accommodate up to 60, and with excellent menu options showcasing fresh seafood and produce, your guests will not want to leave!

Most unique cocktail: Bourbon Jaffa, a mixture of bourbon, amaretto, cocoa liqueur and fresh orange bitter, served with a chocolate-dipped orange slice.
