This Riverhead brewery is the perfect place to sink some of Auckland best craft beers on a summer afternoon. Pull up a chair in the lush biergarten, nibble some snacks fresh from the on-site garden and savor one of their classic range, numbered 1-8. Feeling adventurous? Try the seasonal Clevedon Strawberry Sour or the Mr. Yakimoto Rice Lager.

Little Creatures

Named for the live yeast cultures present in their beer - affectionately known by brewers as ‘Little Creatures’ - this craft brewery resides in a former air force aircraft hangar in Hobsonville Point.

The brewery fills this enormous space with three eateries (including a cocktail bar), a Havana coffee roastery, a children's playground and event spaces. It's the most family friendly brewery in Auckland, which may be why it’s hugely popular, often welcoming thousands of beer enthusiasts and their families in a single weekend. Luckily Little Creatures can seat around 750 people!

The three dining options offer a variety of food, from classic pub grub like wood-fired pizzas, to café breakfasts, seafood from Salty’s, an extensive vegan menu and some dangerously indulgent desserts. We recommend the Snickers Mess for the ultimate sweet end to your visit.

Little Creatures is temporarily closed during Red, but we look forward to them reopening soon on Friday the 8th of April at 12 noon!

Don’t miss: The legendary Pilsner

Sawmill Brewery

Originally based at an old sawmill in Leigh, the Sawmill has earned its spot as one of Auckland’s best breweries since 2004. The relocated ‘Smoko Room’ and brewery now sit in beautiful Matakana Village. Snagging a car park can be tricky on weekends (even more reason to book a shuttle and let us handle the parking!) but the drive is worth it.

Inside the Sawmill Brewery, steel tanks gleam against wood. The interior is very rustic chic, creating a cozy retreat for a winter afternoon. Outside tables take in views of green hills and a few beanbags dot the lawn for those wanting to soak up some sun. The food here is designed to share with friends and family, and dishes incorporate as much local produce as possible. Snack on crispy salted pork scratching or tuck into a whole Kaipara flounder.

Most importantly, Sawmill beer is clean, flavorsome and balanced. Their seasonal beers include some inventive flavours such as citrus and pine, while their Homegrown IPA series collaborates with craft brewers across New Zealand.

Don’t miss: Pink Lemonade Sour brewed using local Matakana lemons and a touch of raspberry puree.
